A video of the incident in Ujjain shows how the villagers attacked a medical team that was carrying out a vaccination drive in the village.
Madhya Pradesh,May,25,2021: Amedical team carrying out a vaccination drive in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain was attacked by villagers with sticks and rods on Monday. One member of the medical team suffered injuries on his head and was seen bleeding profusely.
A video of the incident has now gone viral on social media showing villagers armed with sticks and rods attacking the medical team in Ujjain. In the clip, the members of the team can be seen trying to escape even as the villagers chase them with sticks.
The medical team that was in Malikhedi village under Unhel tehsil in Ujjain was trying to create awareness about Covid-19 vaccination when they came under attack. Police said, “Some villagers verbally abused them and hit the husband of the assistant secretary on his head. An FIR has been registered against 4 persons.”
The man who came under attack, Shakeel Mohd Qureshi later said, “We went there to create awareness and vaccinate people but they didn’t want to get vaccinated. We thought we will go to them and talk to them but some people came there along with a crowd and one man hit me on the head with a stick.”
Qureshi further said that the villagers claimed that they were in good health and do not need the vaccine. They also claimed that people have been dying due to the vaccine.
Qureshi, the husband of assistant secretary Reshma, said there were 50 people who attacked the medical team. However, reports say there were at least 150 people in the mob that attacked the team.
Shakti Singh, a local of the village, told National News Channel, “The medical team was talking about how Covid-19 is spreading and also about the vaccine. They didn’t force anyone to take the vaccine. They were interacting with the villagers when suddenly a group came and attacked them.”
Police are now on the lookout for all those who were spotted in the video of the incident. Two of those who have been named in the FIR have already been arrested while search is on for the others.
